Chad’s Silversmithing
United States
Приєднався 9 жов 2020
Hello! My name is Chad Parker, and I am a long-time jewelry silversmith. If you are interested in learning a new hobby that pays for itself, or want to create a lucrative business, this channel is a great resource. Silversmithing has been a money maker for me. Here: find great content related to silversmithing, including project videos, tips, techniques, information on gemstones, and other content for makers. I often get people who do beading or wire-wrap who are ready to try to learn to use a torch. Two of the strengths that I bring to my instruction are my soldering skills, and my 30+ years as an educator. One of the joys about this is that everyone finds their own best way to do things when metalsmithing. I hear great ideas from other makers that I absolutely never thought of. I love sharing ideas, techniques, and tips. I welcome comments, video ideas, and people sharing their methods. I try to answer all comments!

Make an Ornate Setting for a Long Cabochon: A Silversmithing Tutorial
This tutorial shows how to make an intricate prong setting for an elongated oval Turquoise cabochon. This is an advanced level project. For materials, I used 16 (1.3 mm) and 18 (1.02 mm) gauge sterling round wire, and 16 gauge (1.3 mm) sterling square wire. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux, although I used a little of Easy paste solder for the final bit.

Fancier than a fancy thing! That's awesome Chad, very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful weekend.
You too Gazz! Thanks:)
Thank you Chad for the awesome design and instructions!! I’ve wanted to make this type of ring for awhile-you make it look so easy!!
Thanks Carol! It was a good challenge. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but I am pleased:)
Looks great!
Thank you Beauford!
Pretty!
Thanks:)
🎉🎉 thank you
You’re welcome Joy! Thanks for the nice comment:)
Interesting idea. It came out beautiful. I love the mixed metals
I’ve been trying to think of a way to use that chunk of triangle wire for some time:)
Very nice design
Thanks Mundo!
Very pretty! That's really cool to come across one of your older pieces. Fantastic work as always Chad and thanks for sharing.
Thank you Gazz!
I started out with your stackables, and now I am going to try this! I love the ideal!!
That’s awesome MaryLee!
Hey, Chad, where do you get those nice stones? Having hard time finding a source for nice gems for settling. Thanks! (I guess asking Pepe for a rolling mill worked out for the best!, congrats!!)
Hello Nardine! I usually buy stones in person at gem and jewelry shows. It also helps if you have a friend who does a lot of lapidary:). Recently, some very kind people have given me quite a few pretty stones which I really appreciate!
Beautiful ring! Great video!!! I want to try this!!🤗💐
If you do, send a pic to my instagram account. I’d love to see it Jwon!
Fantastic
Thanks Richard! I had fun making this one:)
Yep, as usual, got me thinking.....
Uh oh…
Thank you
You are very welcome:)
I feel like it's so hard to do a flush setting without a proper flex shaft.
Loving suggestion: micromotor.
Having something that goes slowly is definitely helpful. The one I succeeded with I used my cordless drill.
Thank you
You’re welcome Curious! Glad you liked it:)
Thanks!
Thank you so much Stacy! That was very generous:)
very timely, chain maille is quite "in" right now
Is it? Well, good timing then:)
Good Morning Chad! Would you mind sharing a link to the polishing compounds you use? I just did a search for white diamond and it came up with a few different items and I am not sure which one to get. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I love your tutorials!
Sure Amelia:). www.riogrande.com/product/osborn-white-diamond-polishing-compounds/3315181GP/ And www.riogrande.com/product/zam-cut-and-polish-compound/331123GP/
@@chadssilversmithing Thank you so much! Your the best! I just purchased a 1/2 HP bench polisher buffer on amazon but it doesn't have the surround shelf case that yours has. Is there a fan or exhaust in that thing you are using? Any tips on what I could use in place of that unit with the tray?
@@ameliasphotography3406 you might be able to build a plywood box with an exhaust fan out the back.
Thank you
You are welcome Curious!
Congratulations Chad! You’ve worked hard and produced great content!
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thanks Denise:)
Amazing piece of art! Love the dad joke! 😂 made me giggle!
Thanks! Apparently, when you reach a certain age, they just happen, whether you've reproduced or not (Dad jokes I mean):)
Really lovely piece, nice challenge for me to have a go at. G'day from Oz
Thanks Chris! Same to you:)
Yes, we are across the Pacific, we pronounce it correctly here in Australia as it has a L in it.😀
Hehe! I love the way Australians speak:). I have several Patrons in Australia whose speech patterns and idioms make me happy!
Question not related to this project ?u# I’m hoping you can come up with a practical solution: I had pressed a band into an intricate design with very little negative space. Once I got to the part where I’d need to solder the band to form a ring I was stuck at, “how to I make this solder line disappear without disrupting the design?” I ended up scrapping the piece while I look for a solution! Ideas? Thank You!
Sometimes with a complicated pattern it is difficult to get an invisible seam where you join a band together. I have use a file or a graver to manually "flow" the pattern together in the past. Does that address your issue Ann? If not, send a pic of what the issue is to my Instagram so I can get a better grasp of what exactly the issue is. Sometimes if I can see it, I can figure out a solution better:)
This is such a unique and beautiful piece. I never would have thought to make a bracelet like this. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm really glad you liked it TitianBelle! Thanks for the nice comment:)
I used to always apologize for a messy house saying, “it’s not usually like this” until I realized it actually was always like that! Needless to say I don’t apologize anymore! 😊
That area of my shop seems to get last priority as far as organizing:)
Just wondering how long this actually took to make ?
Hello LatheGal:). It took about 3 hours for this one, part of which was figuring out what exactly I wanted to do:)
Really nice piece Chad. You always put down your sawing skills but always do well at your sawing bench. Really enjoyed this one as it was a real “build” sawing and slotting those pieces in and applying the back plate. Thanks for another excellent tutorial!!
I'm glad you liked it Bill! I wasn't completely sure I could make this one happen, but it worked:)
Thanks
Thank you for your kindness Judy!
❤
Thanks WizardKitty!
Chad, you always make things happen that I would never think possible. You're helping to stretch my brain. Thank you... AGAIN!
Always glad to stimulate some out of box thinking Reid! Glad you liked it:)
Love how this turned out! 😍👍 Marriage of metals is a great technique. Chad, do you use any kind of protectant on your pieces when using copper?
Thanks Rochelle! I haven't up to this point. Do you use something?
@chadssilversmithing I like to use Renaissance Wax to help protect and slow the oxidation process.
Beautiful.
Thanks!
That would look great with the copper rutilated ring you made. Beautiful work Chad and thanks for sharing. Take care and have fun.
Thanks Gazz!

I also like how you pronounce Aluminum:)
@@chadssilversmithing that'll be aluminium! 🤣
😍
Thanks Dr. Helga!
Without a doubt, that’s the cutest bat pendant I’ve ever seen!❤
Thanks Suzanne! I thought he turned out well, but the video has sort of underperformed:)

Thanks John! I like this one too:)
Hi Chad I have downloaded your book, but I'm having trouble opening the video link. Any suggestion?
I love this! A great way to use the stones I’ve been cutting AND incorporate my chainmaille!
You'll be the fanciest Knight around:)
Hi can you come to Australia and give me private lessons because I can’t leave the house due to phobia and I have been working with sterling silver for awhile now put need more lessons in flat metal . Just put it down as a holiday
Hehe! I would love a holiday in Australia:). Wish I could afford it!
What would you recommend to file down the sharp edges of the filigree on a silver bangle bracelet
I'd have to see it, but the blue silicone abrasive wheel would smooth things without endangering fine details too much.
This is a beautiful piece. I love watching you create! ❤
Thank you Delia!
I love it!!
Thanks Andrea!
Another awesome tutorial chad.
I'm really glad you liked it Jay!
